Server Storage Controller Decision Guide

Internal reference / RFQ workflow

RAID Controller Cache and Battery Procurement Checklist

A cache-protection component is part of an exact controller and platform assembly. Request the controller, cache design, battery or energy-pack part number, cable and carrier together, and define the evidence required for the quoted unit instead of assuming that a visually similar module is interchangeable.

Evidence scope

Selected first-party images document representative controller hardware, cache-protection components and an internal server storage path. They are visual references, not proof of a specific model or universal compatibility. Final identity, availability, condition, firmware, cable, backplane, platform support, packing and quotation remain order-specific.

01

Decision summary

Identify the controller first, then match the documented cache-protection design, battery or energy-pack part number, cable, carrier, firmware and server platform. Ask for order-specific evidence of the quoted components; a battery label or connector shape alone does not prove compatibility or usable condition.

  • Exact controller identity
  • Cache-protection architecture
  • Battery or energy-pack part number
  • Platform and evidence scope

02

Separate cache policy from the protection component

Record the required controller behavior and the documented protection hardware as separate fields. Dell describes non-volatile cache preservation for covered PERC controllers, but the applicable cache behavior and hardware must be checked against the exact controller rather than generalized across families.

  • Controller cache capability
  • Required write policy
  • Documented protection method
  • Exact firmware context

03

Match battery, energy pack, cable and carrier

Capture readable labels for the controller and protection component, plus the interconnect cable, mounting carrier and server model. HPE installation material provides a platform-specific example of controller cabling and an energy-pack connection, reinforcing that these parts belong to a documented assembly.

  • Battery or energy-pack label
  • Cable and connector
  • Mounting carrier
  • Server model and location

04

Define condition evidence without inventing health

For used or pulled parts, state which visual, diagnostic or controller-status evidence is required and whether it applies to every unit or a sample. Do not treat the presence of a battery, a printed rating or a clean photograph as proof of remaining life or a completed functional test.

  • Readable component labels
  • Visual-condition scope
  • Requested status output
  • Unit or sample coverage

05

Plan replacement and service boundaries

State whether the RFQ is for a complete controller assembly, a replacement protection component or a spare kit. Record any installation, configuration and service boundaries separately, because sourcing an exact part does not by itself validate an operating-system change or live array procedure.

  • Complete assembly or component
  • Replacement or spare purpose
  • Installation responsibility
  • Configuration and recovery boundary

06

RFQ checklist

Send the controller and server model or part number, quantity, cache requirement, battery or energy-pack identifier, cable and carrier details, firmware context, target condition, destination and requested label, visual or status evidence. Final availability, condition, test scope, packing and quotation are confirmed per order.

  • Controller, platform and quantity
  • Cache and protection component
  • Cable, carrier and firmware
  • Condition, evidence and destination

First-party evidence

Practical proof behind the guide

These first-party images document representative product, inspection, packing, shipping, tracking or policy evidence, as applicable to this guide. Final order evidence is confirmed separately.

Dell EMC PCIe card with heat sinks and a metal bracket in a protective tray
First-party server storage-controller card reference. Exact RAID or HBA role, firmware, connector, bracket, cable and platform requirements are confirmed per RFQ.
Dell storage controller module with heat sink, connectors and attached battery
First-party Dell storage-controller module reference with an attached battery component. Exact controller identity, cache design, battery or energy-pack requirement, firmware and server support must be confirmed from the quoted part number.
Rear view of a Dell storage controller module and its mounting carrier
First-party rear-view reference for a Dell storage-controller assembly. The carrier, edge connectors and mounting form are visual inputs only; exact model and platform compatibility remain order-specific.
