A server drive bay works through a chain of platform-specific parts. Trace the exact controller, port, cable, backplane or expander, bay, carrier and drive interface before ordering any one component, and keep power, firmware and chassis revision in the same review.

Decision summary

Approve a replacement only after the controller-to-bay path is documented end to end: server and chassis, controller and port, cable at both ends, backplane or expander, bay, carrier and drive interface. Matching a cable color, connector shape or partial part number is not enough.

Start with the chassis and bay configuration

Record the complete server model, generation, service tag or equivalent platform identifier, front-bay count and current backplane part number. Similar chassis can have different bay, backplane and cable configurations, so a server family name alone is not a complete RFQ input.

Record both ends of every cable

Photograph or transcribe the cable label and both connectors, then record routing and length. HPE publishes model-specific cable information and Dell publishes platform-specific backplane cabling, showing why a familiar connector cannot replace an exact cable and chassis review.

Confirm controller and backplane functions

State the controller model, port used, intended RAID or HBA role and the target SAS or SATA drives. Record an expander or separate power/control path when present; do not infer protocol, lane routing or bay support from physical fit alone.

Include carrier, firmware and evidence scope

Add the drive carrier part number, server and controller firmware context and any required platform documentation. For supplied parts, request readable labels and the agreed visual or functional evidence without assuming that a photograph proves every bay, lane or firmware combination.

RFQ checklist

Send the server and chassis identifier, controller and backplane part numbers, quantity, bay configuration, cable labels and connector photos, expander or enclosure details, carrier, target drive interface, firmware requirement, target condition, destination and requested evidence. Final availability, condition, test scope, packing and quotation are confirmed per order.
